Starcraft 2 Protoss Guide – Units Explained in Specifics   by Eve Allison

One of the coolest characteristic of the Protoss race is that they have very strong and Impressive units in the entire game of Starcraft 2. And that is why I am writing this Starcraft 2 Protoss strategy guide on how to use every Protoss unit efficiently.

Protoss Units:

Probe – Probes are the weakest units of the Protoss race. They don’t deal much damage, and they have very little health and shields. However, they are also a units that no Protoss players can win games without. And this is because they are the units that gather all of the essential resources needed to build your armies.

Zealot -One of the most basic unit short of Protoss is the Zealot. In the beginning of the game Zealots are great for melee combats, as they are weak against most range units. However, once you upgrade their charge ability, Zealots can be much more effective even going up against most range units.

Stalker – Stalkers are one of my favorite units for the Protoss. Stalkers are general strong against most units of its rank, and once Blink is upgraded they are even more powerful.

Sentry – If you’re strategy involves mostly ground units, and then sentries should be an essential part of your plan. They don’t deal much damage, but that’s not how they should be used for anyway. Sentries are support units, and they should be used properly for their special support abilities like the Forcefield, Hallucination, and the Guardian Shield. Lastly, keep in mind that Sentries should be kept at the back of your army for extra protection.

High Templar – High Templars are also very weak and deals no damage just like the Sentry. However, High Templar is extremely powerful at destroying your enemies units because of their ability to cast devastating magic powers. They can use Feedback to drain your enemy’s energies, as well as a Psionic Storm that can wipe out an entire army.

Dark Templar – I just love the Dark Templars. They are extremely strong and permanently cloaked melee units that deal massive damages to all other ground units. Dark Templars are best used for ambush strategies where they cannot be detected, as they are very vulnerable otherwise.

Archon – Archons are very expensive, they are created by morphing two Templars together. Overall Archons are very strong, they have the ability to deal splash damages to both air and ground units. The biggest problem you will encounter with Archons is that they move very slowly and have very short attacking range.

Observer – One of my favorite scouting unit in Starcraft 2 is the Observer, It is a small flying robot that is permanently cloaked just like the Dark Templar.

Immortal – Another very strong range unit for the Protoss. A bit costly to make but overall it deals massive damage to all ground units, and the best part about Immortals is its ability to take massive amount of damage due to the Hardened Shields ability.

Colossus – The Colossus is another very popular unit of the Protoss. With their long range dual Thermal Lance weapons Colossi can easily destroy an entire bio ground army like hot knifes going through butters. Unfortunately, just like the Immortals Colossus cannot attack air units either. However, with the proper protection of units such as Stalkers, or Void Rays Colossi are a devastating part of any Protoss army.

Warp Prism – The Warp Prism can pick up a bunch of units and then fly across the map and drop them off. It is a Protoss transportation unit that is in my opinion too expensive. However, they do have a special ability that is very useful, and that is their ability to going to Phase Mode. Phase Mode acts like a temporary Pylon that generates a source of Power Field which allows Warpgate units to be warped in.

Phoenix – Phoenixes is a Protoss air to air unit that can move and shoot at the same time. Unfortunately, the move and shoot ability of the Phoenix is only useful against units that have shorter attacking range than it. The Phoenix also has a nether special ability called Graviton Beam, which allows it to temporary levitate a small ground unit into the air to be attacked.

Void Ray – Void Ray is a Protoss air unit that is capable of attacking both ground and air units. The special aspect of Void Rays is in its ability to focus and charge up its beam attack to deal a lot more damages, especially against heavily armored units like the Battlecruisers.

Carrier – Carriers are like the Navy aircraft carriers except that is in the air and on the sea. The Carrier can carry up to a maximum of eight interceptors which caused 25 mineral to build, and they can attack both air and ground units/structures.

MotherShip – The Mothership is the mother of all Protoss units. It is created at the Nexus once you have Fleet Beacon constructed, and it cost 400 mineral and gas to build. The Mothership is the most expensive unit in the game and yet it does not deal a lot of damages, but it does have some awesome abilities. First, it has the passive ability to cloak all nearby friendly units and structures. Second, the Mothership can create a black hole that temporary sucks unit into them. Lastly, it can recall an entire army across the battle field instantly with Mass Recall.
